Taking Action

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

No one is going to achieve success without taking action. I have found some action success tips from The Magic of Thinking Big by David J Schwartz, Ph.D.

  1. Get a clear fix on where you want to go. Create an image of yourself 10 years from now.
  2. Write out your 10 year plan. Your life is too important to be left to chance. Put down on paper what you want to accomplish in your work, your home and your social departments.
  3. Surrender yourself to your desires. Set goals to get more energy. Set goals to get things done. Set goals and discover the real enjoyment of living.
  4. Let your major goal be your automatic pilot. When you let your goal absorb you, you’ll find yourself making the right decisions to reach your goal.
  5. Achieve your goal one step at a time. Regard each task you perform, regardless of how small it may seem, as a step toward your goal.
  6. Build 30 day goals. Day-by day effort pays off.
  7. Take detours in stride. A detour simply means another route. It should never mean surrendering the goal.
  8. Invest in yourself. Purchase those things that build mental power and efficiency. Invest in education. Invest in idea starters.

Without action no goal can be achieved and without goals we wander aimlessly through life following every whim. This maybe okay for a while, in my younger days it was how I lived, but it does not maintain you through life. We are all after success in some area of our lives, to achieve success you must have a goal and follow through with action.

What are your goals in your relationships, your career, your health and personal growth? What actions are you taking to achieve them?

Use the guide above to get you started and to keep you moving on track to your goals.

Action Cures Fear

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Every one of us is on a road to somewhere. Most of us are confident that somewhere will be an improvement to where we are now because we are taking steps to get there. Some of us however are frozen or held back by fear and the only cure for fear is action.

That’s easy for me to say, right?

I hear you, I know it is easy to say. I also know overcoming fear can be a difficult, frustrating and drawn out process. I am no stranger to fear, though deep down I know I’m capable of anything something (fear) holds me back in a number of situations. Attempting to identify your fear trigger points can start you on the journey to overcoming your fears.

You want success don’t you? Yes, of course you do. Well then let’s take a look at some fear inducing circumstances and some action steps for resolving them.

  • Appearance – Feeling embarrassed or self conscious because of your appearance can be enough to hold people back by not speaking up, keeping to yourself or as a contributing factor to shyness. Action Step: Look at ways you can improve how you feel about yourself for example begin an exercise program, even walking can lift your spirits, go to the hairdresser, a new hairstyle can make a big difference, give yourself a facial, any improvement you can make to your grooming is bound to make you feel better. Also remember a lot of our negative feelings, about our appearance, we have created so try some positive thoughts about yourself.
  • Fear of what you can’t control – Control over ourselves our action and behaviour is really the only kind of control we should be concerned with. Action Step: I taught the following prayer to my son when he was young as he often worried about many things and was prone to whinging and stressed behaviour, now he is any adult and a very calm and peaceful young man.

God give me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference.

Try it, it can’t hurt.

  • Fear of what others may say or think – People do talk, but it is true they usually find more time to talk about themselves. Those that talk about others in a negative way are usually doing so to make themselves feel better. Action Step: Make sure you are doing what is right.  Great achievers have been critisised the world over, thankfully they didn’t let that stop them. If you have goals you want to achieve find out what you need to do to achieve them, make a plan, and follow it.
  • Fear of failure – This could be one of the biggest. We really don’t know what we can do without first trying. We may not win the race, we may not become a millionaire, we may not achieve everything we want in life. As long as we ran the race, or made some money, or achieved some of what we wanted, as long as we gave our best we have not failed. Solution Step: Use your fear to drive you, you have not failed as long as you are still working on it. People are capable of overcoming the most enormous obstacles, if it’s what you want, if it will benefit others, if you have considered it carefully then don’t give up.

Getting the Most out of Your Goals

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

More and more people are becoming aware of the need to have goals in many areas of their lives but it is a good idea to refresh what you know and check you are on track.

This week I have been going over some lessons in Og Mandino’s book University of Success, while reading the lesson on goals I realised I didn’t have it all covered. Goal setting is about programming yourself for success and even though we may all be aware of goal setting we may not be putting it to good enough use in our lives.

Goal setting helps you plan for a better future, without a goal and therefore a destination to head for you could end up anywhere. Where do you want to be in the future – in a week, a month, a year, five or ten years? Goals can also be used in more than just your career. Goals should also cover what you want to achive in relationships with your partner, your friends and your children.

  • Setting goals in your area of income will help you achive financial security and a lifestyle you enjoy.
  • Setting goals in your marriage could keep your relationship alive and add a greater depth of meaning and love.
  • Setting goals in the area of children – this may be one you haven’t considered beyond giving them an education. Many parent / child relationships break down in the teenage years because no clear goals have been thought about for the kind of relationship you want with your child or parent. A lot of emotional heartache can be avoided if this is considered and discussed.
  • If you are single you may want to plan and set goals to find a fulfilling life relationship. It has been said that people tend to put more time and effort into buying a car than into choosing the person to spend their life with.
  • Setting goals in the area of friendship will help to keep these relationships strong and meaningful, without them you may find your friendships are shallow and superficial.

Some of these may give cause for thought…

  • How is your life at work going?
  • Are you where you want to be, what can you do?
  • How is your relationship with your spouse, can you do more?
  • How are your relstionships with your children, your friends?
  • Do they feel how much you value them?
  • How is your day to day existence, could it be better?

Be imaginative and creative in your ideas on how to enhance, improve or change anything in these areas of your life.

Our lives should not just be an existence they should, for as long as we live and beyond, be a creation.

Challenge Yourself to Success

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Doing what it takes to be successful can be a challenge, stepping out of the mediocre line, becoming above average isn’t always comfortable but it is an answer to many problems.

It is human nature to grow, to expand, to progress if you are not challenging yourself there’s a good chance you are not feeling completely happy with your life.

Life is for growing, achieving and building upon the talents and abilities we possess. Our challenge is to constantly and consisitently strive to reach our full potential. We all have more that we can give, the extra sit up, run just 5 more minutes, read one more page. Whatever it is we can push past our inner barriers and get closer to our goals.

What are the qualities needed for success?

They are whatever qualities you possess utilised to the fullest extent possible at any given time. So don’t sit back and wait for something to happen get up, go out and go find the answer to achieving your dreams and goals. There is no perfect moment to get started, but there will always be reasons and excuses to wait for a better time and so waiting becomes a habit. Make a start, a small one is better than none at all, and then just keep going.

Once you decide to take action guard yourself against the critics and even your own harsh judgement. You will make mistakes but mistakes are fine as long as you adjust yourself and keep going. You have an obligation, and you deserve, to live a successful life, to strive for happiness and abundance.

Creating wealth in your life honestly then using your wealth wisely is something you can be proud of. So what are you waiting for? Give yourself permission, for it is only yourself that holds you back.

Something to Think About

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

We are very close to the end of 2009 and as Jamie McIntyre, financial educator and success coach, has a habit of saying, ‘I want to give you something to think about’. What better time to go over the past year and assess how you are progressing toward your goals, what goals have been achieved and what improvements can be made.  Maybe you haven’t made any plans or goals yet, if not this time of year is an excellent opportunity to get started.

I have gathered a few questions together that you can ask yourself, answering these may help to sort out the things you want and how you can achieve them. See how many you can answer, but have a goal to answer them all soon. If you’re still under 25 you’re in a great place to consider what you want to achieve over the next few years or so and set up a plan.

I had no idea where I was going when I was 18, one day just followed another, I met my husband, at 21, and then my life followed his direction. I don’t regret it, I’ve had a great life but I know if I or we had considered some of the following questions when we were starting out, life could have been easier. In fact I believe it would have been a lot easier in many ways. Even if you’re over 25, if you haven’t already done so find your answers as well, it’s never too late.

Get a journal or notebook write out each question, add some more of your own if you want, and give yourself a page or two for your answers as they may change over time. Life doesn’t come with a ‘How To’ handbook, we all set out to do the best we can though, anything to make the journey a little easier is worth a bit of your time.

  1. What are my dreams?
  2. What do I want to achieve? (goals)
  3. What are my values?(see below)
  4. What strategies or methods will I use to achieve my goals? (further training, education etc;)
  5. How committed am I really?
  6. What type of lifestyle do I want?
  7. Where do I want to live?
  8. What do I really enjoy doing?
  9. Can I (do I want to) make an income from this?
  10. What do I really want to accomplish with my life?
  11. How much income will I need to make a month to meet my needs now and in the future?
  12. What is my purpose?

It may seem a lot to ask and answer but I encourage you to make an effort to do so anyway. One thing I learnt years ago was to take a good look at people 5, 10, 15, 20 years older than yourself, people just like you doing what you’re doing, in your field of work or family. If you’re heading in the same direction is it where you want to go? If not, then the above questions might help you find a better course for you.

Right now, the life you have is the only one you’ve got, do what you can to give yourself a chance for the best positive outcome.

Following is an extensive list of values, consider choosing 10 that may be important for you to live by, as you look through these values ask yourself,  what is important to you, what values would you like to live by or aspire to, write them down, remind yourself regularly, choose to live by them and you will achieve greatness and success in your life.

Aim High

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Everyone wants to achieve something in life, often though we don’t allow ourselves to be all we can be. We may have had experiences throughout our lives that have led us to believe we can’t do certain things. These feelings cause us to live our lives with much less than we want or could have. You were born and you have as much right as anyone to be here and achieve great things in your life. So decide today that your thoughts will change to ones of great expectations, grateful for whatever you have then set some goals and work your way towards them.

Every now and then you may get disheartened when you’ve set a goal and the deadline is coming up and you’re nowhere near it or you’ve fallen short of what you wanted to achieve. For example if you set a goal of making $1,000,000 in 2 years and you find that you’ve only earned $200,000 after 1 year then you may need to re-evaluate your strategy but you shouldn’t lose sight of your ultimate goal if anything you should raise your standard. You should also feel that you have accomplished something great.

Even if you feel that you can’t work any harder you probably can, but be honest when you make this assessment. Increase your efforts slightly and see what difference it makes, it may not always be possible to maintain it continually, but attempt to always improve your effort.

It has been scientifically determined that as adults we probably sleep a lot more than we really need to. If you find that you just can’t seem to get everything done in a day try waking up earlier each day. Go to bed at the same time but gradually increase your waking up time by 5 mins until you find yourself with an extra 15, 30 or even 60 minutes a day. Think of what you could do with that time, go for a run, meditate, read or anything that would improve your life. Time is not negotiable we all get the same amount each day it’s what we do with it that makes a difference.

Keeping your expectations high even when things don’t look so great certainly puts you on the right side of success. If you allow yourself to get bogged down by negative thoughts regarding your progress you will slow yourself down even more. Always know a solution can be found. Are you using all your resources, have you developed a network of people you can go to for information and advice? Have you remained open to learning and researching new methods to achieve your goal, could you do any further training that would help?

Maybe you do need a day off, take one, project yourself into the future promising yourself that once a certain task is completed you will reward yourself. Stay on your path to your goal, keep your expectations high no matter what, even if you don’t quite make it you are certainly closer than if you did nothing and you have learned a lot. You know a lot more about what it’s going to take to achieve your goal and if you never give up you’re already a winner.

Have a fantastic day

Climbing the Ladder of Success Part 2

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

How are you going as you climb your ladder?

Are you concentrating on your goal and taking each step you need to take to get there? photo_8730_20091014

More importantly are you staying focused?

I think this is one of the most important issues as you climb and that is having the determination to stay focused. Imagine climbing a ladder and getting distracted by a bee that keeps hovering around you, losing focus as you climb could mean disaster.

In the last post we looked at the first of the three steps to becoming successful from Og Mandino’s book, University of Success, Know What You are Doing, in this post we will look at the next two:-

  • Love What You are Doing and
  • Believe in What You are Doing

Love What You are Doing

In Mandinos’ book we are told if we don’t love what we are doing then we are being underpaid (p 296), that is not going to create wealth in your life.  Working in an area you don’t enjoy can be one of the biggest drains on your energy and optimism. Can you really perform at your peak if you don’t like what you’re doing, if there is no passion for your work?

If you’re not doing what you love start looking for ways to change that and may I suggest in the meantime to find what you have to be grateful for. Complaining about your life is not focusing on where you want to go and it will just give you more to complain about.

Believe in What You are Doing

People are persuaded by passion and belief, one thing that is common among great achievers is the belief in what they are doing. Belief breeds dedication and dedication will keep you on track.

I like this little anecdote from University of Success, (O.Mandino p 299).

An old tramp was sitting on a park bench, he had holes in his shoes and pants he was also badly in need of a wash  and a shave. He watches as a Rolls Royce goes by driven by a chauffeur, carrying a man in a tall silk hat and says, “There except for me, go I.”

What are your beliefs, do they carry you forward or hold you back?

The world is like a mirror showing you what your thoughts, beliefs and enthusiasm have created, change them if you need or want to and you will change your world.

So there we have three great steps to examine and take as you climb the ladder to your success, follow them and you will reach the top.

Today’s Power Thought

My life is a mirror, with that knowledge I can grow and change.

Cheers
